Sowing and Reaping…what do these two words have to do with the Kingdom of Heaven or with Jesus dying on a cross for us at Calvary? Once we have gained the victory over death, hell and the grave by accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior (and you have gained victory no matter what you are going through), we step up and into the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Holy Spirit enlightened me that “The Kingdom of God” is within us and “The Kingdom of Heaven” is a place. But what in the world does sowing and reaping have to do with us? Well, everything. Everything in the Kingdom operates by a seed…everything.
Sowing-Planting a particular type of seed for growth; plant seeds in the land
The definitions of reaping are: cutting grain, etc, as harvest- It also means to receive as the consequence of actions.
There are two forces that happen in the Kingdom and they are Action and Reaction. You cannot get away from them. These two forces are going on even if you are not aware of them. I have tested and tried both of them and they are very real but you can’t see them.
Genesis 8:22 “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.”
The above-mentioned scripture appears in the beginning of the Bible. It is unchangeable. God set this up, man didn't. You see cold and heat, don't you? You see winter and summer, don't you? Why in the world would we not have seedtime and harvest? In other words, sowing and reaping.
Years ago, when I first heard of sowing, there was a girl who stopped by the nail shop I owned. She was going to come and answer the phones for me. She told me not to pay her any money. She said she was going to use the time she spent helping me as “seed she was sowing for Heaven.” Excuse me? Seeds? Sowing for what? What are those? I rolled my eyes thinking, “You are nutty.” When I heard the term “sowing,” all I could think of was a garment that was being sown. I had never heard of such a thing. I was in my thirties and thought I knew everything. To me, this certainly did not sound as if God had said it, but once again, years later, I found out that I was wrong. We desperately need exposure in the Body of Christ to things of the Kingdom so we can, as God’s children, partake in what He has set in motion for us.
Years later, the Holy Spirit gave me an analogy of this seed concept. In my mind’s eye, I saw a farmer going out to plant seeds in the ground. I recall when my dad would go out to plant a crop full of corn. I remember him first breaking up the ground to prepare it for sowing. Then he would get all of the debris out of the soil to clean it up. Once the soil was ready, he would plant the seeds. He would water it, keeping a close eye on it in case anything would spring up that wasn’t supposed to be there (weeds) and then he would wait for it to come forth. He waited through the sun and the rain for the first glimpse of a blade. What is important here is that he knew it wasn’t time to reap the corn yet. He had to be patient for it to grow. If he had pulled up the blades too soon, he would have had crop failure and would not have realized any corn. This is how everything in the Kingdom works…by a seed. Without a seed, there is no harvest and without patience, there is no crop.
For every seed sown there is a harvest, whether it is good, bad or ugly. Let me bring this down to everyday life. I remember in the seventh grade I felt like I didn’t have any friends. I was talking to my mother and she said, “Molly, if you will be nice to others, they will be nice to you.” In other words, you will reap what you sow. I was kind of hefty at the time and was very self-conscious but I started really trying to reach out and be nice. I was amazed at the difference. If you are hard, cold and bitter, you will reap people who do not want to be around you…get it? The principle is simple. Apply it to everything, even money. You reap what you sow.
I have tested out most everything in the Bible. I am not any different than you, but I took a step of faith to believe that what I was reading was the truth. It is one of the most phenomenal things I have ever witnessed. Every time a seed is sown, whether it is money, good deeds or time spent working out so that my body will function properly, there is a harvest. You can apply seeds to every area of your life.
For example, if you stay up late and gorge yourself, the next day you will reap being tired and you might very well have an upset stomach or worse. Or you might see a beautiful new outfit at the mall and on a whim you buy it, knowing in your heart you shouldn’t. What do you reap? You reap guilt over doing something (I am certain some won’t feel any guilt!) you know you shouldn’t have done because that action may cause you to run short at the end of the month. You just reaped a funky harvest whether you know it or not but you did reap something. That was just an example. Apply seeds and harvest to any situation.
Money, Time, Gifts and the Kingdom
In Isaiah 55:10 God says that He gives seed to the sower. My question to you is, are you a sower? Will you let what you have in your hand determine what you are going to sow? Will you be obedient to sow what God tells you to sow and where God tells you to sow?
Being a sower in the Kingdom of Heaven is supernatural. You can’t see the Kingdom of Heaven and its soil but it is there. I learned in the beginning of my walk with God to always come before the Lord with my seed, whether it is money, my time or my gifts. If I need something in my life, I go to God with a seed in my hand. Now, I can tell you that eleven years later through experience and the testing of every seed I sow, God has been faithful. Jesus Christ is called the “Lord of the Harvest” so I make certain that I take it all to Him. He oversees the seeds that are planted, the money that is tithed and sown and He will watch over it. As far as being a “sower” (I am talking about money here), if God can get it to me, then He can get it through me.
The Holy Spirit guides and directs me as what to give, where to give and how much to give. Until I was told by the Holy Spirit to stop, I used to go to an assisted living facility every several weeks and manicure some elderly women’s fingernails. I also used that as an offering to the Lord in order for this ministry to break forth. I also used this as a seed in hopes that when I become elderly, someone will do the same for me. As stated, Jesus is the “Lord of the Harvest” and He is responsible for bringing the harvest in the way He sees fit. Sowing money will not always reap you money. Sometimes it can reap you something else you need more. The people I have taught this to have embarked upon life in the Kingdom of Heaven and have found it to be true as well. But, if you sow sparingly, you are going to reap sparingly. Closed fists are not for the Kingdom. Sowing and reaping is available to all of God’s children but it will require faith on your part. Not everyone is able to believe. A lot of us are okay with offering up time and talents but when it comes to money, well, forget about it.
Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
In other words, YOU will reap what you sow. Now, I don’t know about you, but I want a harvest that runs over. It is a matter of your heart being right before the Lord, who controls everything.
The sowing and reaping concept is foreign to most of us, yet very, very real. Some things that are hard for us to understand are things we have never been exposed to before and may seem strange to us at first. You may feel that way about sowing and reaping. Just because you haven't heard about it doesn't mean it is not real.
Once you sow a seed in the Kingdom of Heaven, then you need to just let it do what it is supposed to do. Water it and watch over it (this is where believing comes in) but at the same time, don’t pull it out of the ground before its time. This is done by griping and complaining. Sow your seed in faith, believing for a harvest, and God will honor it. You have to let your confession over your seed be positive. Remember, speaking negative things out such as asking why your harvest is taking so long, can cause you to end up with CROP FAILURE.
There is a Divine Law that is established in this earth, set up by God and it is called the Law of Reciprocity. In other words, give and it shall be given. I don’t care if it is money or something else. I talk a lot about money because we, as a nation of people, let money be our god instead of letting GOD BE OUR GOD AND “LORD OF THE HARVEST.”
Having faith is a seed. The Bible teaches this and examples are found in Matthew 13: 23 and 31-32.
You are God’s child. He knows you better than you know yourself. He wants what is best for you, right here and right now. It all begins with a seed. Sow a seed by believing that God has your best interest at heart and wants to see you prosper in your health, your finances and your life. I can tell you that most of us just let life happen to us without taking charge of it ourselves. He has answers for you personally but it will be up to you to seek them out. We can hear the Word preached and taught, but it is ultimately up to us whether to believe what we hear or not. If you cannot find it in the Word of God, then be careful about who you are listening to. Listen, read and meditate on God’s Word and use that as a seed for your life to be better, much better than it is right now.
You will have to be the one to take a step of faith and find out about sowing and reaping. All the letters and advice in the world are not going to do it for you. YOU have to do something. Your “due season” (when the harvest is ready) will come but you have to stay steadfast. Satan wants you to quit by planting unbelief in your heart.
Depending on what kind of crop you are looking for will depend on the size and the kind of seed you are planting. When I have given all I have had in my pocketbook, God has honored it and always brought a harvest. BE led by the Holy Spirit of God as to what to sow, when to sow it and where to sow it, above all.
One BIG thing I learned was that you have to be wise where you plant your seed. Not every place that says the name of Jesus is good soil. The Bible teaches, “by their fruits you will know them.” I was tithing in a Body of Christ and the Lord directed me to stop. What kind of fruit is being brought forth from the place you sow your money? Do they do the work of the Lord? Do they feed the hungry and clothe the naked? Do they take care of the needy within their own four walls? Pray always and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you with your money…He will. He is the great financier. Above all, He sees into men's hearts and knows exactly who is with Him and who isn't.
Sowing and Reaping….it is by faith alone that you enter into this. If you don’t like what is going on in your life, then what are you sowing?
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that will he will also reap. For he who sows to the flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
